Aston Villa have completed the signing of Ross Barkley on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
As first revealed by Telegraph Sport, Villa had shown an interest in both Barkley and his Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Barkley was always Villa manager Dean Smith’s first choice of the pair, but there had been doubts over whether or not head coach Frank Lampard would allow the England international to leave Stamford Bridge on loan.
But Lampard gave the 26 year-old the green light to go and Villa moved quickly to complete a deal that will see him move to the Midlands.
Villa manager Dean Smith said: “Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team.”
Loftus-Cheek is still likely to be allowed to leave Chelsea on loan before the transfer window shuts, but his options may be limited.
Although a number of clubs have shown a strong interest in Loftus-Cheek, many have been scared by his £150,000-a-week wages and his injury record.
Lampard has insisted that Loftus-Cheek is as “fit as a fiddle”, but Villa prioritised Barkley and it is believed West Ham United also have reservations.
Fulham are one of the clubs interested in Loftus-Cheek, but any move from Chelsea’s neighbours may depend on whether or not they can sign defenders on permanent deals.
